Melissa Bennion

CLARINET
My name is Melissa Bennion, and I have the privilege of serving as the principal clarinetist for the Southwest Symphony. My journey with the clarinet began in sixth grade, inspired by a friend's interest. What started as a casual pursuit quickly grew into a deep passion. During high school, I studied under Dr. Nick Morrison at Utah State University and later took lessons from Mike Dean after relocating to southern Utah. Later, I was honored to receive a music scholarship from Gary Caldwell to attend Dixie College, where I was also given the incredible opportunity to solo with the Southwest Symphony in both 2000 and 2004.

In 1998, Gary Caldwell, who conducted the Southwest Symphony during that time, initially welcomed me into the orchestra as a 3rd/bass clarinetist. Then, in 2001, a series of changes left the principal position open, and despite my limited experience, I was asked to step into the role. It was a challenging leap for both me and Gary, but one that truly helped shape me as a musician.
